Are You Thirsty?

Water Running in front of flowers

“…If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.” ~John 7:37b

I don’t know if y’all have noticed or not but I talk a lot about staying hydrated. I find that if I don’t drink enough water during the day I start to feel really cruddy.

About a year-ish ago I was exercising about an hour a day and not drinking nearly enough water. As a result, I began to feel light-headed and dizzy. When I discussed these feelings with Mom we came to the conclusion that I was really dehydrated. Thankfully I was able to catch this before it got way out of hand. Since then I have become really aware of when I do or don’t drink enough water.

This got me thinking about our Spiritual water intake. Jesus describes His Word as both bread and water (John 6:35). Bread and water are the basics of what we need to live. Jesus provides that for us. He says that man should not live by bread alone but by every word that He speaks (Matthew 4:4).

Imagine how you would feel if you didn’t eat or drink anything for an entire day. I don’t think I would feel very good. I imagine that I would feel sick and tired; irritable and grumpy. We can try really hard to eat right, exercise, and stay hydrated physically; but if we don’t spend any time with God during the day we will still feel cruddy. We may not know why immediately, but if we take the time to really think through our day I believe that we will realize that we are dehydrated and starving ourselves spiritually.

We need to remember that in the middle of this crazy life the only way that we can stay grounded is by staying in His Word. Just because we are in the Word daily doesn’t mean that the storms won’t come. Staying in the Word means that when the storms do come we have a steady anchor; deeply knowing the God we serve and being secure in His love and plans for our lives.

Until next time,

Bailey Sue
