Loathing, Glorifying, and Thanking

Here’s the thing. I’m not a big fan of housework. We all have certain jobs that need to be done around the house. Some of the jobs that I have I don’t mind doing. Others I actually somewhat enjoy. Others I really don’t like doing. At all.

The job that I really don’t like is cleaning the cat litter. I’ve had this job for the past 8 or so years. Ever since we got our first cat Oreo. But here’s the truth. I rarely ever clean it. I LOATHE CLEANING THE CAT LITTER (Remember in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” The Grinch standing on top of the mountain reading the phone book saying “Hate. Hate. Hate. LOATHE ENTIRELY”)? Yeah, that’s me when it comes to cleaning out the cat litter. I don’t have a particular reason why I hate it, I just do.

The rule is that it gets cleaned out daily. In the 8 or so years since we got Oreo, I’ve probably cleaned it out maybe a third of that time. But it’s never consecutive. I don’t think I’ve ever done it for 14 straight days.

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” ~Colossians 3:23

We are told to do everything to glorify God. Matthew 5:16 tells us that we can lead others to glorify God just by shining the light of God in our everyday lives. We are also told to obey those God has placed in authority over us (1 Peter 2:13-14); our parents, bosses, and government officials.

I think something that we don’t realize is that sin is sin. We as humans have put a level on sin. Murder is worse than being disrespectful, stealing is worse than speeding 5 over, etc. But here’s the thing all sin is bad (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). And all sin if not repented of will cause separation from God (Isaiah 59:2).

So, how are we to glorify God doing something that we LOATHE? I think the answer is to count your blessings. I LOATHE cleaning the cat litter. But I’m thankful for my cats. They snuggle with me at night, let me pet them to relieve stress (which we all know I could use a little stress relief), and a good dose of laughter. Just the other day JoJo was holding and petting Oreo. She was not very pleased and was meowing wanting to be let down. So, JoJo put her down and Oreo kinda stood there and then all of a sudden lunges at JoJo’s foot and attacks it! Evidently, she was pretty mad…When my Great Grandma died in 2012 we were able to take in her beloved cat Calico. She has been so sweet and fun to have around and she’s taught me a few valuable lessons along the way.

In life, we will always have things that we LOATHE doing. That’s just how life is. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t learn to have joy in the middle of it. After all, we’re told to be thankful in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18). And who knows maybe if we quit avoiding those tasks that we LOATHE like the plague we may just sleep a little better at night.

Until next time,

Bailey Sue
