Apprehending the Enemy

Fear seems to be one of those things that easily slips in behind us as we walk through this life. One minute we’re just walking along fairly content and the next? Well that’s when fear jumps out of the woods and scares the beejeebies out of us!

So, what do we do when fear attacks us? Do we succumb to it’s lies and believe what it says or do we scream out loud for reinforcements?

I don’t know about you but more often than not I succumb to it’s lies and begin to believe them as true…When fear attacks the truth of God’s Word sometimes seems hard to find and even harder to believe. I begin second guessing everything: my calling, my friends, my attitudes, motivations, and my failings in life. I’m so busy in a discussion with my enemy, making a bargain that I forget to call in the reinforcements until it’s almost too late!

So, in that moment when Fear first attacks, what do I? Do I immediately begin to identify the true source, or do I just start believing every word that comes out of its mouth as truth? Am I interrogating fear and making sure his story backs up with the evidence found in the Bible?

“Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
~2 Corinthians 10:5

If we begin to take the suspicious thoughts that we have into custody so to speak and interrogate them based on the evidence found in the Bible we may just realize that we have a few more prisoners than we thought. And you know what? Those thoughts have a ringleader. And it may look like he’s got the upper hand in your life or the world right now but HE’S BEEN CAUGHT AND DEFEATED. He’s been destroyed by the work that Jesus did on the cross (1 John 3:8, ESV)!

The Devil may have already lost the battle. He knows he’s in trouble so he’s going around looking for someone, anyone willing to take up his baton and finish his work (1 Peter 5:8). His favorite tactic is lying. He slithers into our thoughts and tries with all of his might to get us to believe that we aren’t good enough, pretty enough, or able to serve our loving God.

But you know what? We don’t have to sit there and listen to him any longer! We have the power to defeat him because we have God on our side. And God is the Devil’s worst fear. So, how can we defeat this Devil and rise above his lies?

“And they overcame him by the blood of the lamb and by the word of their testimony…”
Revelation 12:11a

We call in the reinforcements! We remind the Devil that He’s already been defeated by the blood of the lamb. We tell him (and remind ourselves) of the things that God has done for us in the past. How He’s come through, His love and faithfulness. We ask God to help us believe His truth and to help us in our unbelief (Mark 9:24). And eventually the Devil is gonna realize that He’s been busted yet again and we can lock him up where he belongs!

But here’s the thing. He’s a master escape artist. He’s going to escape that prison cell. So we NEED TO BE ON GUARD–EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF EVERYDAY! (1 Peter 5:8). We’ve been given protective custody–the best and the only ones in the world that have been proven time and time again to defeat this enemy. It’s our job to take them at their word and use the protective armor that they provide for our safety (Ephesians 6:10-18). Because we don’t know when or where our enemy is going to strike next. Are you prepared?

Until next time,

Bailey Sue
