Last Friday we got our first load of dirt delivered! We added some coffee grounds and eggshells to the garden beds before we topped them off with the dirt. A month or so ago we sat down and made a list of everything we wanted to plant this year. Shortly thereafter we placed an order. For whatever reason, the order has yet to arrive. After we got all the dirt moved to the back yard we ran some errands. While we were out we picked up some seeds–just to make sure that we had what we needed in case the order arrives too late.

Saturday was supposed to be a washout instead, it was nice for most of the day!

When we woke up and realized it wasn’t raining our plans quickly changed and we high-tailed it outside to get done as much as we could before the rain hit! We started by putting up a temporary chicken wire fence around the herb garden to keep Jasper out. When the rain continued to hold off we started planting the garden. Taking a look at our seeds, figuring out how much to plant of what, and where it all should go. Then we planted all of our cold-weather crops just in time for a rain shower to water them!

We have 8 garden beds and each year as we plan the garden we think about what we planted the year before. If it grew well and how much we used it. We talk about what we liked, what we didn’t like, and new things we may want to try. Essentially we take the bare bones of the garden and start over. Adding compost, dirt, coffee grounds, and eggshells to make the soil better then planting our seeds or starts to the amended soil. In many ways, it’s like a fresh start and a clean slate for the year!

“This is the day which the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
~Psalm 118:24

As I thought about planting the garden and the fresh start each year I can’t help but notice the similarities to our lives as Christians! Every single day we wake up and get out of bed we’re given a fresh start, a clean slate!

“The LORD’S lovingkindness indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning…”
~Lamentations 3:22-23

We can take the lessons we learned the day before and build on them allowing ourselves to reflect more of Jesus! But you know what? That’s not the end–there’s more! Because of His grace, this fresh start and clean slate aren’t just renewed every 24 hours, they’re ours to claim as often as we need (Hebrews 4:16)!

If you had a really rough morning and messed up big time take a minute, say a prayer, and ask for His forgiveness. Then move on. Start right there and do better. That moment–whether it’s 9 AM, 3:36 PM, or 10:01 PM–that’s your fresh start and your clean slate!

“And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this down for these words are faithful and true.'”
~Revelation 21:5

Just as each planting season is new so is each day and moment of our lives. God is making all things new. He is making us new–transforming us more and more into His image (2 Corinthians 3:18). In celebration of God making all things new each Spring, I designed a shirt–the same one I’m wearing at the top of this post! You can order your very own in a variety of colors using the link HERE.

Until next time,
