Home Business Essentials

I feel a little like Goldilocks. Over the years I’ve worked in nearly every room of the house. My “office” has been in the basement, the dining room, the sunroom, & the sitting room. I’ve worked with just a laptop sitting on the kitchen counter, on the porch, or on the living room coffee table (my most recent “office”). And there have been times when I’ve typed out posts sitting in the van using only my phone.

As much as I’d love to create and use an office space, I’ve come to the conclusion that I probably never will. Simply because I’m always afraid I’m missing out on something. I like to be close to the people & the action.

However, now having two businesses out of the house we’ve gotten pretty good at storing all of the essentials in an organized and neat fashion so that both home businesses are barely noticeable to company. The truth is that you don’t need an HGTV worthy office to be a good homebusiness owner. You just need a few simple things…

1) Good Pens

Granted, I’m a writer but I LOVE pens, pencils, highlighters, and the like. We have writing suplies in nearly every room of the house! I’m not too picky when it comes to what I write with. It honestly depends on what mood I’m in as to what I want to write with. But these G2 Pilot Pens are some of our favorites! They even come in different sizes depending on how thick you want the strokes to be! 🙂

2) Colorful Markers

Along the same line as pens a good set of markers is also helpful for taking notes, updating your calendar, or simply to add some color to your day. These marker pens are our favorite!

3) Desktop Calendar

The bigger the better! I’ve tried so many different calendars, planners, and organizers, and the best one that we’ve found that works for all the things is a desktop calendar. Something that lays flat, allows you to see the entire month, and has big boxes for writing everything you need to know about each day!

4) A Label Maker

Depending on what you do you may not need one of these but it’s something to investigate. This is one that JoJo purchased for the Bakery and it’s REALLY COOL! It only prints in black and white, but it doesn’t use any ink! This Printer could work for labels of different sizes depending on what your specific needs are.

5) Post-it Notes

Seriously, there are NEVER enough of these. We use them to make lists, take quick notes, Bible Journaling, etc. Get yourself a variety of sizes, you won’t regret it!

6) Small Legal Pads

Again, you can never have too many notepads. These a great for taking notes, making lists, or even sketching out a diagram.

7) Folders

Kinda self explainatory, however you’ll be surprised by how much paperwork you’ll come across as a home business owner. Webinar notes, ideas you don’t want to forget, important papers, etc. Folders help you keep everything nice and tidy! And boy, do you have options!

8) Filebox

For all the important papers you need to keep but don’t need right this minute! I have several of these. They’re easier to handle than a great big file cabinet and much easier to hide away if need be!

9) Paper sorter

This might be the former homeschooler in me but these are great for files, or different kinds of paper. If you happen to have a desk this can easily make a cluttered desk a little cleaner!

10) Magazine Holders

Surprisingly we still get several magazines in the mail but these also work for filing papers or folders and look sharp sitting out on a shelf!

11) Generic Office Supplies

If you don’t already have some of these around the house go ahead and pick them up. You never know when they’ll come in handy!

12) Printer and Laminator

Again, this might be the homeschooler in me but having a printer and a laminator is immensely helpful. The printer I’ve linked below is similar to the one that we have. I really like it because you don’t have to configure any fancy settings. Just plug the USB cord into your computer and into the printer and print! Easy peasy! We’ve used the laminator for protecting signs, labels, etc. that we’re going to be using more than once (for both homeschool and office!).

Before you go out and purchase all the things for your new business take a minute and think about what you ALREADY have. Is there an extra stash of partially used notebooks you could use for notes? Or some gently used file folders from some project? Owning a business is far from Instagram-worthy. Offices often don’t look professionally designed. More times than not it’s a laptop on the kitchen counter or the dining room table covered in paperwork. Think about what you really need, what you already have on hand, and what you could hold off on just a little while longer.

Spend time in prayer asking God to guide you day by day as you live out your dream & then hang on! You’re in for a wild, difficult, and wonderful ride!

Until next time,

Bailey Sue
