It’s been awhile since we’ve talked & there are a few new faces around here. So I thought that it’d be fun to introduce (or reintroduce) ourselves!
Hi! 👋 We’re the King family! We currently live on 3/4 of an acre in Southwest Ohio. Our big dream is to own 25+ acres & transform it into a Christmas Tree farm, sunflower field, pumpkin patch, & an event barn. Then as we’re able each family would get a portion of the property to build their own house on.
But in the meantime we’re determined to make the most of where God has placed us right now. Making the most of the land & house that we’ve been given (Matthew 25:15-30).
Now, you may be thinking, “3/4 of an acre isn’t a lot. How can you homestead with so little?!” Truthfully, 3/4 of an acre isn’t a lot, but it does provide a lot of opportunity.
We’ve been eating eggs solely out of the backyard for over 5 years now. Our garden easily provides Spring salad until we’re tired of seeing lettuce in addition to supplementing our grocery budget with fresh produce; such as tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, sweet potatoes, & peppers just to name a few. We’re growing a variety of berry bushes & herbs as well. Each year we also preserve a good portion of our produce through canning, freezing, & even freeze drying.
We have three dogs & four cats (two indoor, 2 outdoor) in addition to the chickens & a bunny who supplies fertizler for our garden. We’ve also gone in with our neighbor & raised meat birds. The past 2 batches have been raised on his property but we’re hoping to work on some projects this year (such as building a new chicken coop), that gets us closer to being able to raise them on our property.
While we do homestead & strive to live off the land we also buy generic groceries at the store on a weekly basis. We enjoy cooking & baking from scratch while also enjoying a store bought pizza on occasion (it’s all about balance!).
As homeschool graduates we enjoy problem solving & learning to do things ourselves. In fact our businesses & a good portion of what we do on the homestead we’ve learned from YouTube & Google searches! Our goal here is to share with you what we are doing & how we do it as inexpesively as possible. Then you can take what we do & make it fit YOUR family & YOUR LIFESTYLE. You don’t need a lot of land or animals to homestead. You don’t need to grow the majority of your food to be considered a homesteader. In fact, we started our homesteading journey on 1/4 acre surburban lot growing food in our “flower beds”. If we can do it, you can too!
Homesteading is a lifestyle. But homesteading to us is so much more than gardening, preserving, & animals. Yes, that’s a big part of it but there’s more. It’s also cozy nights in front of the fire curled up watching a favorite movie, sitting in the sunshine reading a good book, or a day trip to a local museum. It’s living out our faith in Jesus, holidays spent with family, & learning to balance work & play.
Here you’ll see a bit of it all. A family that makes mistakes but ultimately loves each other & works together toward a common goal whether it’s the day-to-day upkeep of the house/property or working together to make the tree farm a reality.
We hope you’ll stick around & join us on this journey!
Until next time,
Bailey Sue
It’s fun to read how productive your little homestead is, even on less than an acre. I sure hope you get to have your tree farm dream come true someday!
Thank you! We’re glad that you enjoy following along!
Thanks for the update! 🙂 Glad you can work together in such a meaningful way that honors God, blesses others, and nourishes your bodies & souls!! That special 25 acres is out there waiting for you!
