Have you ever felt like you don’t have the space, time, or the proper equipment to start working toward your dream, but you want to do something?
The other day we were out picking tomatoes and it reminded us of our humble beginnings. When we started homesteading 10+ years ago on our suburban 1/4 acre lot we didn’t know that it would eventually evolve into what it is today.
Dad has always enjoyed gardening & still loves to be outside and “make hay while the sun shines”.
So we started really small. We all liked salsa so we grew some tomatoes, peppers, & cilantro to make salsa. We experimented with growing a couple of other veggies we knew we liked like peas & cucumbers but the “Salsa Garden” was our main focus. We tried to grow the majority of what we would need except for the onions & garlic. We just bought those at the store.
We started where we were at the time doing something that we loved & found interesting.
Once we moved to our new house with more property (3/4 of an acre) we started the same way: with a Salsa Garden!
Then year by year, bit by bit, we added to it. Lettuce, corn, carrots, zucchini, butternut squash, pumpkins, onions, asparagus, & our most recent addition, garlic!
There is still so much that we want to add. So much more we want to learn & accomplish. But we can always do something. Take a small step towards where we want to be.
There is NO right way to homestead. No specific formula you have to follow. You don’t have to wait until you finally get that dream property or the newest & best equipment.
You can start right here, right now!
Whether it be a small potted herb plant on your kitchen counter or a new vegetable you’ve wanted to try growing. Maybe it’s a new way to preserve some of your garden’s harvest or a brand new recipe you’ve been wanting to try.
Baby steps are better than standing still! Take heart, start small, miniscule if you have to! But bloom right here, right now, using what God has already blessed you with!
“The way to get ahead is to start now, if you start now, you will know a lot next year that you don’t know and you would not have known next year if you had waited.”
