Sometimes my memory amazes me. I can listen to a song 20 times in a row, look up the lyrics and have it virtually memorized the next day. But it seems to be a different story when it comes to memorizing Bible verses. I can write them down five times in a row each in a different color for a day or two but then I make some sort of excuse to not continue. I write them on index cards and carry them in my purse, place them on sticky notes on the mirror and I barely read them.
It’s not that I don’t want to memorize God’s word; in fact, I want to do more than memorize it. I want to apply it. I want to be able to remember these verses in the middle of the daily battles I face.
So today as I was reading a new book that I had received in the mail earlier this week (more on that tomorrow). I was reminded of the importance of memorizing God’s word. I was reminded that Jesus used the Word of God to resist the temptations of the Devil.
So, I decided to do something a little different to try to memorize the Words of God.
I decided to use my phone…
See, I figure I reach for mine WAY TOO MANY TIMES IN A DAY. So, why not use that to my advantage?
I decided to find a verse that I want to memorize and write it on a sticky note, and then put the sticky note on the front of my phone. Then every time I reach for my phone I read the verse. So, far I’ve learned two things. 1) I look at my phone A LOT MORE THAN I THOUGHT I DID. 2) It seems to be working.
I’ve found myself not wanting to look at my phone because it takes longer to do whatever I had wanted to do. However, I’ve reminded myself to not look at my phone any less because I want to actually memorize the verse. I just started this today so I’m not very sure of its effectiveness in the long run, but so far I’m liking the results. (I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I’ve looked at my phone a lot already today; however, I almost have one verse memorized)…
