Several years ago back when we still had cable we discovered that Trisha Yearwood had a cooking show. Growing up I used to listen to country music and I knew that Trisha Yearwood sang the song “She’s in Love with the Boy”. What I discovered is that not only does she make some pretty yummy recipes she’s also married to country superstar Garth Brooks.
Anyone that knows me knows that I love to research music. Figuring out who the artist is, their story, the songs they sing, the meaning behind the song, etc. So, naturally I started researching Garth and Trisha. It didn’t take me long to find Garth’s song “Friends in Low Places”. As I looked at the lyrics I was struck by the thought that the song is directly opposite to what we as Christians have!
“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
~Hebrews 4:14-15
I realized something else too. Often times in life I think we are constantly trying to find the “perfect” friend. That one friend who won’t let us down, reads our mind, understands us, and loves us as we are–flaws and all. In search of this friend we either look for friends in all the wrong places or we put unfair expectations on our friends. Forcing them to try and fill a void in our lives that they NEVER can.
I wonder what would happen to our friendships when we realize just how well Jesus can fill every void that we have.
–Nothing can ever separate us from HIS love (Romans 8:38-39).
–He is the only one who can truly complete us (Colossians 2:10).
–He promises to never leave us or forsake us (Joshua 1:9b).
In life people will let us down and disappoint us time and again. But Jesus, He NEVER WILL! He’s always there and NOT A SINGLE WORD THAT HE SPOKE HAS EVER FAILED (Joshua 21:45).
While we need friends and the support and encouragement that they offer our One true friend is in the highest place of all. At the right hand of God interceding on our behalf (Romans 8:34).
Until next time,
Bailey Sue
