I don’t know about you but I’m not much of a risk taker. I prefer to know exactly what I’m getting into and what to expect in any given life event–both the big and the small. As much as I’d love to be a world traveler and see new places. I’m content to do so from my couch with a big bowl of popcorn and my warm, fuzzy blanket.
But here’s the thing. So much of this life is risky. Relationships can fail, jobs can fall through, death can take a loved one, and so much more. But as Christians we have a safety net: The everlasting arms of our Savior.
“The eternal God is your refuge,
And underneath are the everlasting arms;
He will thrust out the enemy before you,
And will say, ‘Destroy!'”
–Deuteronomy 33:27
When life calls for us to take a risk we shy away. We get scared and either run the other direction or avoid it altogether. Rarely do we face the risk head on. Why is that? You know, I’m not really sure but I do know from personal experience that we may just think that if we wait it out God will work some miracle and we won’t have to face that risk at all.
But here’s something that I’ve noticed the past several months. When God is leading us to step out and take a risk side stepping, avoiding or running the other direction doesn’t do us any good. In all honesty, it just makes us miserable.
So, when God is calling us to take a risk that scares us what do we do?
We rely on the promises of God!
God’s word is filled with numerous promises, instructions, and encouragements. Many of those promises extend to us today. We need to remember these promises that God has given us and hold Him to His word. He is faithful!
One of the things that I have begun recently is praying Scripture. I’ve gone through the Bible and found specific Scriptures that pertain to what I am going through in this stage of my life and I personalize them for me. I’ll “replace” the word we with I and in my daily prayer time I include them.
I have found that I am reminded of even more promises and things that I may need to work on. So, I’ll add those as I think of them. Sometimes when there’s something very specific that I want to pray about I’ll look for a verse and find that the verse says just what I need for that prayer request.
I encourage you to try this and see if it helps you in your life. I know that it has reminded me of God’s love, faithfulness, and the care that He has for each of His children.
Until next time,
Bailey Sue
When we went to Africa one of our favorite songs was “Please don’t send me to Africa” I believe by Scott Wesley Brown… We went anyway….. Thanks for the encouraging thoughts!

I’m not an adventurous person by nature, but I have learned to boldly & confidently claim God’s promises as His gift to me!! His promises, not my actions, fill my heart with an abundant measure of grace, mercy, and peace.
