*Before I get into this post I want to make it known that I am NOT trying to make any political statements I am simply sharing something that I have learned that I hope encourages you.*

I have lived in America and the same state in America my entire life. I have voted in every election since I turned 18 and have worked the polls every election I could. But never before 2020 had I taken a truly vested interest in our political process. Or sought to really understand the in’s and out’s of what could, or should happen. I’m not even sure I could tell you who my State Representatives were prior to 2020 let alone email them.

I knew the basics of the United States Constitution–Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

I knew that the First Amendment guarantees the freedom of religion, assembly, and the press. And the Second Amendment guarantees our right to keep and bear arms. Beyond that, I didn’t really know much else and sadly I was okay with that. Until 2020. When everything shut down last March it caused me to take a second look at how I viewed the Government and what its place and mine was in bringing about the change I wanted to see. Especially since November, I’ve been truly shocked by what I didn’t know about our great Nation and its History.

For instance, did you know that in 1948 The Chicago Tribune wrongly declared Thomas E. Dewey President? Did you know that the election in 1876 was also highly contested? What about the fact that the Constitution has laid out a procedure for contested elections similar to what we’re seeing today? I didn’t know any of this prior to last year!

And I can’t help but wonder… If I’ve lived in America my whole life and didn’t know half of our laws and rights as citizens; how am I doing with the Word of God?

Sure, I can quote John 3:16 and Philippians 4:13 and I know that salvation comes through Jesus alone… I’ve got to ask If I had a surface-level understanding of American Government; my place in it, and the power of my one voice to bring about change…

Do I have a surface-level understanding of Jesus too?

I don’t have the answers. I’m not going to slap a few sentences together and quote a few Bible verses and act like I do. I don’t know what the answer is.

What I do know is that I want more than a surface-level understanding of Jesus and what He wants me to do with what He’s given me…

If we want to see a change in our lives and in America as a whole it’s got to start with us. And we’ve got to quit sitting behind our screens waiting on someone else to do it. Change starts with us (me). We change, our families change, and then, and only then will America change.

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
~2 Chronicles 7:14

Until next time,

Bailey Sue
